Tomato SEEDS – GROWING MADE EASY!
Follow these practical steps for a healthy, high-yield tomato crop.
Ideal Climate Conditions
Tomatoes grow best in moderate climates.
They need cooler temperatures during sowing (10-15°C) and slightly warmer ones during harvesting (15-25°C).
Moderate rainfall between 400-600 mm ensures healthy growth.
Soil Preparation
Begin by deep ploughing the field 4-5 times to create a fine tilth.
Level the land and mix in organic compost.
Solarize the soil for one month using a transparent plastic sheet to naturally eliminate harmful soil-borne pathogens.
Seedling Nursery Management
Use raised nursery beds (80-90 cm wide) and cover them with nylon nets for protection.
Sow seeds at 4 cm depth, water gently every morning, and ensure proper air circulation to avoid damping-off.
Sowing & Transplanting
Timings vary by region—spring and autumn in plains, and early summer in hilly areas.
Transplant 25-30 day old seedlings with 3-4 true leaves.
For older seedlings, de-top before transplanting.
Proper spacing (60x30 cm or 75x75 cm) ensures good air flow and growth.
Irrigation Schedule
Water every 6-7 days in winter and 10-15 days in summer.
Irrigation is most critical during flowering, as water stress during this phase can cause flowers to fall off, reducing yields.
Growth Support Sprays
Apply nutrient-rich foliar sprays to support plant growth, flowering, and fruit development.
This includes sprays for early-stage nutrition, flowering support, heat protection, and fruit ripening enhancement.
Pest & Disease Management
Use natural or cultural control methods to manage pests like whiteflies, thrips, and fruit borers.
For diseases like wilt, blight, and mildew, follow preventive practices like crop rotation, good drainage, and resistant varieties.
